Measuring the temperature of medical technology with Optris sensors

Medical devices are generally compact and small. Therefore, the construction of temperature sensors is a key part of their use. Through continuous interactions with customers, Optris is well positioned to optimize optris CS LT for medical technology.

The optris CS LT fits easily into the smallest medical devices and products thanks to its length of only 87mm and diameter of 12mm.

The optris CSmed LT is a special edition of the device. It offers the customer a significant advantage: a short connection cable with a plug. This cap facilitates quick and easy mounting or removal of the thermometer, for example for standard calibrations.

Temperature control in cryo technology

The optris CS LT can be used routinely in the field of medical technology, including cryotechnology. This technology is also known as low temperature technology and is used to produce low temperatures with a temperature range of around -150 ° C. Cryo technology is generally used for cold shock treatments.

Cold shock therapy is applied in the treatment of sports injuries, muscle stiffness, inflammation, swelling or bruising, as well as hematoma, edema or scar tissue. Inflammation points can be quickly dismantled, which significantly reduces pain.

One of Optris’ medical OEM customers uses gas cylinders containing liquid CO2 gas for thermo-shock treatment. The gas cylinder expels the liquid CO2 with 1-2 bars and is applied to the skin in the form of dry ice.

Throughout this short process, the patient’s skin experiences a cooling effect from a skin surface temperature of 32 ° C to just 2 ° C – 4 ° C in 30 seconds. Continuous monitoring is crucial throughout this process to avoid extreme cooling of the skin and potential harm to the patient.

For simple control of the skin surface temperature, the optris CS LT is inserted into the gun of the head unit, and the measured surface temperature is displayed on a screen.

Due to the extremely wide temperature range of -40 ° C to 1030 ° C, the optris CS LT is perfect for cold shock treatment. The precise temperature display prevents skin damage.

Thermoforming of dental products

A key application of infrared temperature sensors in medical technology is the integration of infrared thermometers into thermoforming devices used in the production of dental products.

One such example would be a client of Optris, which manufactures thermoforming units for dental laboratories. These units manufacture individually fitted mouthpieces, which are used for protection when participating in sports.

Before forming the mouthpiece (plastic film), infrared heaters heat the mouthpiece to a predefined temperature. The part is then thermally homogenized. High surface homogeneity and proper adjustment of reforming temperature will inevitably produce high quality reforming results.

The temperature must be constantly monitored to achieve consistent product quality and to prevent the formation of local burns and cracks in the material.

In current machines, the temperature is measured by measuring the temperature by contact at the level of the radiator. Recently, the same company has started to take advantage of non-contact temperature measurement.

Installing the optris CS LT pyrometer under the infrared heater captures the temperature of the sheet throughout the heating process. Thereafter, the thermoforming process begins after heating is completed to a set temperature.

In addition to precise temperature measurement, the optris CS LT has the advantage that it can be used in environments up to 80 ° C without undergoing additional cooling.
