Open Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Application for Physicians

BHOPAL (Madhya Pradesh): The doctors said that instead of emphasizing the digital platform in the union budget, it would have been better if the Center had announced the creation of a Postgraduate Institute for Medical Education and Research (PGI) in Madhya Pradesh.

The government wants to rely on technology to circumvent the need to undertake physical visits to doctors, carry prescriptions and wait in queues. The digital experience can be good, but only if the facility, doctors, patients and systems work in tandem, the doctors added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been called upon to develop Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Center (BMHRC) as PGI Chandigarh. Civil rights and other citizens’ groups launched a campaign to save the BMHRC. BMHRC, established in 2000, was developed as a 350-bed super specialty hospital and has attracted top doctors from around the world.

Dr Anand Rai said Madhya Pradesh has a bitter experience of dismal digital platform performance in times of pandemic and vaccination. And the condition in Madhya Pradesh is such that there is a need to open the PGI for research related to Covid and other diseases. There are three such institutes in the country – Chandigarh, Lucknow and Rohtak.

After the opening of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bhopal, it would have been better if the Center had announced the opening of the IGP at another location, Dr Rai said, adding that it would strengthen the infrastructure in the health sector.

Health expert Amulya Nidhi said it is high time to strengthen infrastructure in the health sector. But nothing concrete has been done in this direction. The whole country has dealt with the brunt of Covid over the past two years. Thus, in such circumstances, the union’s budget should focus on concrete initiatives in the health sector.
