PCOM Establishes Center of Excellence in Medical Education

The founding documents state that the center will strive to educate the best osteopathic physicians, ensure an understanding that student outcomes match patient outcomes, produce leaders in patient-centered care, and develop a community of campus-wide educators.

According to the president of PCOM Jay S. FeldsteinDO ’81, the founding of the center, which developed the PCOM ONE program for the Osteopathic Medicine program, emphasizes the fact that “PCOM is three separate places, but one university”.

He said: “We want to make sure there will be no difference when our students graduate. philadelphia cream, Suwanee or Moultrie (Georgia) campus. We want standardization and quality assurance, the PCOM hallmark, to be the same when our students begin their residency programs.”

He added, “MECOE strives to ensure that our students have the same opportunities with the same curriculum in the first two years. I don’t think we can underestimate that in today’s world,” said- he said, “because residencies will continue to be more competitive”. . There are more and more osteopathic schools and allopathic schools that keep increasing their class sizes.

Not only is the content different with a new focus on wellness and nutrition, but the delivery of the program has changed. Dr. Feldstein explained that “PCOM ONE involves small groups, active learning, critical thinking skills and team building. This is the world we live in today.”

The center’s mission prioritizes the integration of basic and clinical sciences into a translational education model, communicates and shares evidence of findings for future program development, and inspires and supports research, scholarship and innovation.

Finally, the center addresses cultural competence, health equity issues, and the delivery system, in addition to providing an atmosphere that encourages new ideas and fosters faculty and student initiatives.

The center uses a structure with seven faculty directors spread across PCOM’s three campuses in Pennsylvania and Georgia. The directors monitor the progress of each student throughout their school career.

Dr Feldstein said: “It was a huge undertaking and it was everyone’s passion that made this center possible.
