The Radiology Researcher Certificate Program: A Learning Tool in Medical Education

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The Radiology Researchers Certificate Program (RSCP) is an extracurricular program created for preclinical medical students to address disparities in education and exposure to radiology during medical school.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: The RSCP was designed as a one-year program for first- and second-year medical students. The 4 key elements of the RSCP are: exposure to radiology through observation, knowledge acquisition through self-paced case-based learning modules, knowledge application in interactive workshops, and carrying out a scientific project. Students must complete at least 3 hours of observation, attend at least 3 workshops, follow online modules at their own pace and complete a capstone project on a topic of their choice. Pre- and post-program surveys were administered to assess trends in participants’ perception of the field and clinical knowledge related to imaging.

RESULTS: In the first year of the RSCP, 55% of the enrollment class enrolled and of these, 84% completed the program. About half of the participants were women. Participants demonstrated a significant improvement in their radiology knowledge, with mean scores increasing from 52.8% to 68.6% (p

CONCLUSION: The RSCP is an effective tool to fill gaps in radiology education and exposure during medical school. It is designed to be conducted by senior medical students under the supervision of a radiology resident and an assistant. With motivated investment from students and radiologists, the RSCP should be easily replicable in medical education programs around the world.
